What did diesel cost?
Pick a week and a state. This looks up the average retail price of No. 2 diesel that the U.S. Energy Information Administration recorded for that region, from March 1994 to last week. It is a regional survey average, not the price at any one pump, and it is not a recommendation about where to buy fuel.
Any date since March 21, 1994. Prices are surveyed weekly, so a date snaps back to that week’s Monday.
EIA reports by region, and every region is a whole number of states, so your state picks the region.

Where the number comes from
Every week the EIA surveys retail diesel outlets and publishes an average price for the nation and for each of its petroleum regions. This tool carries that whole series, 1994 to now, so nothing is estimated and nothing is interpolated: you are reading the figure EIA published for that week, or being told there wasn’t one.
What it can and cannot tell you
- It is an average across many stations in a large region, so any single pump can sit well above or below it.
- Regions are groups of whole states, so it cannot distinguish two towns in the same state.
- EIA started some regional series later than others. Where a region has no reading for your week, this says so and shows the next broader one.
