How Your Savings Are Calculated

Updated

Every figure in MyFuelSavings comes from the statements you upload. The one exception is the EIA’s published diesel averages, used for comparison, and they’re labeled wherever they appear.

Your Discount

Your discount is what the program took off the pump price on each fill-up, exactly as your statement shows it.

The Fees

Next, every fee on the statement comes out of the discount. That includes the program’s transaction fee and any flat fee charged per fill-up, whether your statement calls it a fee, a transaction fee or a merchant fee.

You wouldn’t pay these fees if you filled up without the program, so MyFuelSavings counts them as the cost of using it.

Your Net Savings

Your net savings is your discount minus every fee. It’s the savings number you’ll see everywhere in the app: on each fill-up, each statement, each month and across your whole history.

Credits and Adjustments

A statement sometimes carries a promotional credit or a correction from the program. These are shown on their own line, as a credit or a charge from the program, and are never counted in your savings.

A one-time credit isn’t a discount on fuel. Counting it would make a single fill-up look far better than it was, and every average built on it would be wrong too.

Other Figures You’ll See

  • Discount rate: your discount as a share of what the fuel cost at the pump price.
  • Savings per gallon: your net savings on diesel, divided by the gallons of diesel you bought.
  • Kept: the share of your discounts left after fees, as in “You kept 87.1% of your discounts.”
  • Gallons of fuel free: your net savings expressed as fuel at the pump price. If you saved $40 and the pump price was $4.00 a gallon, that’s 10 gallons.
  • What you paid: the pump price total minus your net savings, so it includes every fee.

If you also use the Open Roads app and its numbers look different, see Why Your Savings Differ From the Open Roads App.
